The Women Who Wake Before Sunrise
In the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, every autumn, the women of Taznakht go out into the cold dark to pick saffron by hand. This is their story, and the story of Atlas Blooms.
Picking in the Cold, Before the Sun
While the valley is still asleep, the women are already in the fields, wrapped against the cold, with baskets on their arms. The crocus must be picked early, before the sun opens the flower and weakens its aroma.
They bend, pick and move on, row after row. Each purple flower holds only three red threads, and not one is left behind.

Hands That Know Saffron
Back home, the flowers are poured onto a cloth and the women sit together to separate the threads, one flower at a time. It takes patience and a steady hand, skills that mothers teach their daughters.
The room fills with the scent of saffron, with tea, and with conversation.
A Day in the Life of a Saffron Picker
For two weeks in October and November, the harvest shapes every day. It happens alongside everything else these women do for their families.
Out to the Fields
Up before dawn, a quick breakfast, then the walk to the saffron fields in the cold.
Home with the Harvest
Baskets are carried home. The children go to school, and the women gather to separate the threads.
The Rest of the Work
Cooking, animals, the house, the other crops. Saffron season does not pause normal life.
Drying with Care
The fresh threads are dried gently, away from the sun, to keep their colour and flavour.
Tea and Rest
Families sit together, share tea and prepare to do it all again at dawn.
Each one picked, opened and sorted by hand.
Behind Every Jar Is a Family
Buying directly means more of the value stays with the people who do the work.
Income of Their Own
Saffron gives women in the region an income during a short, valuable season.
Tradition Kept Alive
Picking and sorting by hand is knowledge that daughters learn from their mothers.
Fair and Direct
We buy from local growers at a fair price, so quality is rewarded.
Mountains, Sun and Cold Nights
Taznakht lies where the Atlas Mountains meet the desert. Bright days, cold nights and dry air give the crocus its deep colour and strong aroma. You can taste this place in every thread of Atlas Blooms saffron.
